In the year 2000, a group of citizens wanted to improve the navigational lights on the lake. They decided to build replica working lighthouses to accomplish this.
Note: Several agencies control the waterway and land that the Lighthouse Club has built Lighthouses on, so it required continued multi-agency negotiations for approval before lighthouse placement. This was very time consuming but necessary.
West Quoddy Lighthouse, was the Lighthouse Club’s first replica and replaced a state navigational aid. It replaced the North West Bridgewater Channel Entrance Light and was dedicated on June 30, 2002.
In 2005, the Mohave County Board of Supervisors approved sponsorship & funding for a lighthouse of our choice. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was the one we chose to build with these funds.
After the West Quoddy and Cape Hatteras Lighthouses were erected, AZ State Parks decided that we would have to formalize our Club and provide insurance, etc. before we could continue to build on State Land and areas under their control. This took a couple of years, but in October 2005 we finally got their approval to continue. In the meantime we were building lighthouses on other land, so it didn’t totally hold us up.
When we became formalized and recognized by AZ State Parks, it also provided the criteria that the Chemehuevi Indian Reservation Officials were looking for. We received approval to begin constructing lighthouses on Chemehuevi Indian Reservation Land.
