Built in 1827 commissioned by John Quincy Adams. Because of poor workmanship (salt water was used in the mortar mix), the lighthouse began to crumble and was replaced in 1835. The new contractor stipulated in his contract he would use fresh water.
In 1856 Pemaquid Point received a fourth-order Fresnel lens. The lens is one of only six still in service in Maine. The lighthouse is owned by the Coast Guard and is licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation which has 21 Chapters. Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is one of the chapters. They operate the lighthouse and keep up the restoration.
